Trailer Brakes – Part 3

The last couple of days have been pretty quiet around here, mostly due to illness — no, not H1N1 — moving through our household. Now that everyone, including myself, has pretty much recovered, things are getting back to the normal type of chaos our household usually resembles.

I haven’t done much to the trailer in the last couple of days other than soak a few bolts in penetrating lube in the hopes that they may come off.

Tonight I was able to remove the brake line that runs from the master cylinder to the rubber hose that connects to the axle, as well as the rubber hose itself. Tomorrow I’ll head to the parts store and see if I can source out a new rubber hose and U clip retainer. The brake lines on the axle were much less willing to be removed tonight so another night in a bath of moovit will hopefully help.

The brake line that runs from the master cylinder to the rubber hose that connects to the axle. This one came out easy.

The rubber brake hose that connects the axle to the brake line that runs the length of the trailer frame. There was a stubborn U clip that finally came off with a lot of coaxing.

My other goal for tonight was to hopefully have the curb side brakes removed, but the flange mounting bolts are also being stubborn, more lube for them too. While I was under the trailer, I soaked the leaf spring bolts and they seem as though I can them out. My new direction is to drop the whole axle out of the trailer and work on the brakes without having to lie on my back and protect my eyes from the years of crap under the trailer that seems to find them every time I bump the underside of the trailer.

So, hopefully tomorrow, the axle will be out and things will be a lot easier to work on until it’s time to re-install the axle.
